Steel Sheet Piling Installation in Greater Houston

Steel sheet piling is the heavy infrastructure answer to holding back earth and water: interlocking steel sections driven to engineered depth, forming a continuous wall with strength no other driven system matches. Jordan Marine Construction installs steel sheet piling across Greater Houston, Lake Conroe, and the Texas Gulf Coast for bulkheads, seawalls, soil retention, and structural applications — with our own driving equipment and 40+ years of construction experience.

Sheet piling is as much about the driving as the steel. Our barge-mounted and land-based rigs place sheets accurately in the interlock, drive them to the engineered depth, and keep the wall line true — on shorelines, around structures, and at sites land equipment can't reach.

Our Steel Sheet Piling Installation Process

  1. 1

    Geotechnical & Design Review

We assess soils, retained height, and water conditions, and engineer sheet section, embedment, and anchoring.

  2. 2

    Permitting

Shoreline and waterway installations are permitted through the controlling authority — we run the process.

  3. 3

    Driving

Sheets are set in the interlock and driven to the engineered depth, barge-mounted or from land, with the wall line surveyed true.

  4. 4

    Anchoring & Completion

Whalers, tie-backs, and caps complete the structural system, followed by backfill and site restoration.

Materials & Capability

Steel sheet piling in sections sized to the retained loads, with engineered embedment, structural whalers, tie-back systems, and optional concrete caps. Coatings and section thickness are specified to the water chemistry for long service life.

Sheet Piling Is a Driving Discipline, Not a Materials Purchase

Steel sheet piling arrives as flat-packed potential: interlocking sections that only become a wall when they're set true, threaded correctly, and driven to the engineered depth. The installation determines everything. Sheets driven out of interlock leak soil; sheets refused early on an obstruction leave the wall under-embedded; a wall line that wanders reads forever in the finished cap. Running our own barge-mounted and land-based driving equipment — with 40+ years of construction experience behind the operators — is how we control the variable that matters most.

The engineering pairs section to soil: sheet profile and steel thickness are sized to the retained height and loads, embedment depth to the soil's passive resistance, and the anchoring system — whalers, tie rods, deadmen — to the forces the wall must resist for decades. Coatings and section selection account for the water chemistry, from freshwater lakes where corrosion is slow to brackish bays where the splash zone works hardest.

Access is where our capability shows: barge-mounted driving installs sheet walls along shorelines with no land access at all, threading work between existing docks and trees, and holding line and plumb from the water. Sites that end conversations with land-bound contractors are routine mobilizations for us.

Applications: Bulkheads, Seawalls, and Earth Retention

The classic application is the high-performance bulkhead: steel sheet walls holding tall banks, high-energy shorelines, and commercial waterfronts where vinyl and timber sections run out of strength. Steel's structural ceiling is far above any other driven system, which makes it the default for the demanding end of shoreline protection — and pairing the wall with a reinforced concrete cap produces the premium assembly for commercial and HOA installations.

Beyond the shoreline, driven sheet walls solve earth-retention problems inland: cut-off walls, retention for grade changes, and protective walls around excavations and structures in soft Gulf Coast soils. The same interlocking continuity that holds back a lake holds back saturated clay.

Every shoreline installation is permitted through the controlling authority — SJRA on Lake Conroe, TRA on Lake Livingston, City of Houston on Lake Houston, USACE/GLO on the coast — and finished as a complete system: whalers and tie-backs installed, backfill placed and compacted in lifts, drainage detailed, and the site restored. Steel walls we install are built to be the last wall that shoreline needs.

Steel Sheet Piling Installation FAQs

What's the difference between sheet piling and a regular bulkhead?

Sheet piling is the method — driven interlocking sections — and steel sheet piling is its strongest form. Every bulkhead we build uses driven sheeting; steel is the choice when height, loads, or exposure exceed what vinyl or timber sections can carry.

Can you drive sheet piling in tight or water-only access?

Yes. Barge-mounted driving handles shorelines with no land access, and we routinely work around existing structures. Access constraints shape the plan, not the feasibility.

How deep does steel sheet piling get driven?

To the engineered embedment — a function of retained height, soil strength, and loads, not a rule of thumb. Adequate embedment below the mudline is what anchors the wall's base; we drive to the design and verify as we go.

How long does steel sheet piling last in freshwater vs. saltwater?

Freshwater walls corrode very slowly and serve for many decades with minimal attention. Brackish and salt exposure concentrates corrosion at the splash zone, managed with coatings and heavier sections sized to the environment. Both are engineered decisions we make from your water chemistry.

Can sheet piling be installed close to my house or existing structures?

Yes, with planning — driving induces vibration, so proximity shapes equipment and method selection. We assess nearby structures and choose the installation approach accordingly; working around finished properties is normal marine work for us.

Is steel sheet piling overkill for a residential lot?

Sometimes — and we'll say so. Moderate residential banks are usually well served by vinyl at lower cost. Steel earns its premium on tall banks, high wave energy, heavy surcharge loads, and owners who want maximum structural margin. The site assessment sorts it honestly.
